Sandra’s Tips

Nobody knows how to get a job better than Sandra Connell. She has advised thousands of people. If you are looking for your first job in television or your next step up, there are guidelines to success that you need to know. Here are Sandra's personal tips for television news people who want jobs.

Audition Tape Guidelines

Tape Length: Twelve to fifteen minutes maximum. Hopefully, you've got their attention and they'll ask for more. Make every day a great day because they may ask to see what you did yesterday at six.

Tape Format: Submit tapes to Talent Dynamics on VHS format. If you are submitting a tape to a TV station, check with them for proper tape format, but VHS seems to be universally acceptable. Make sure your tapes are checked for quality. If you can't get your resume tape right it only raises doubts about your attention to detail.

Rundown: Your tape rundown should be on a 3x5 card taped to your tape box. The objective is for the news manager to know what they're going to see. Don't affix it to the tape...have you ever tried to read tape labels when the tape is in the deck?

Slate: Slate the head and end of your tape with your name, home address, and day and night telephone numbers. Make sure you spell your name right...we've had a surprise or two. Do not include colorbar opens or station promos. Time is money!

Montage: We love well-produced 45 seconds montages. Use your own judgment when submitting to a station. Some news managers find a montage a waste of their time. No music please!

Resume: Always make sure you include a current resume. No mention of references is better than "references on request". Include a reference list with easy access phone numbers. Make it easy for someone to check you out. They may spot a buddy and you might be a shoe-in! The good 'ol boy system is alive and well in broadcasting.
