Q: Is there a fee for your placement service?
A: There is a one-time-only $35 processing fee. That gets you entered into our database and your tape (if applicable) logged into our library. You can update your resume or reel as many times as you wish thereafter.
Q: Do you take a percentage of my salary if I get the job?
A: No, we are not agents or a personnel service. The one-time-only processing fee is the only cost to you.
Q: Does it matter if I have an agent?
A: No, we work with all the agents on a regular basis. It does not affect how we work with you or our clients.
Q: Do I need to send you several copies of a resume and tape?
A: No, we can make copies of your resume and dubs of your reel from here.
Q: What format?
A: We prefer VHS but can take most any format you choose with the exception of DVCPro and Digital Beta.
Q: Will you call me and let me know when a station is looking at me for a position?
A: We may touch base with you periodically to update our files and visit about your situation. We may also call you occasionally to find out your interest in a particular position. You are welcome to call or email us at any time.
Q: Will you critique my tape and give me feedback?
A: Of course we'll review your work and will be happy to visit with you about it. However, we have TD staff who provide in-depth tape critiques, including makeup & wardrobe. Just refer to these services on our website.
Q. People like Diane Sawyer, Peter Jennings, Bryant Gumbel, etc, have important jobs on TV, why can't I?
A. Perhaps you can, but it will take time and lots of work. They have been in the business a long time, paid their dues, built reputations and have developed over many years their own, genuine style. You can't try to copy someone. It will only look like a bad imitation. First you need to discover your OWN strengths and build on them. Plus look at your OWN areas of need and work to diminish any distracting physical or vocal mannerisms.
Q. What do I need to do so that I can move to a bigger market?
A. You need to commit to your station, do the best job possible, and learn all that you can. Sometimes people are trying to move ahead without bothering to learn the basics. You need to focus on the job you've been hired to do. Challenge yourself each day to be genuine, curious, and hard working. Think about the viewer benefit for each story. Don't define yourself by your limitations. You need to understand the responsibility that you owe to the viewer. Doing this will help you become a better communicator and journalist.
Q. What does the image consultant do? How much are those services?
A. There are several levels of services that we offer. The first and least expensive is a critique. The critique is $150. Our consultant, Mary McGrew-Cunningham, looks at your tape and gives you a constructive written, extensive visual critique, complete with color suggestions, make-up, hair and wardrobe advice. A follow up phone conversation and product recommendation is available at no extra charge.
Q. What do you do as a talent coach?
A. We evaluate each person to determine existing attributes that can be enhanced to improve communication skill. Maximizing the positive parts of a person as a communicator is key to improving. We also use our training to improve vocal, visual and non-verbal approach to storytelling.
Q. Why do people need talent coaching to communicate?
A. Many people feel that we are who we are. That’s true, but we all can use objective critique and constructive ways to improve our performance in any area. Many reporters and anchors are trained to develop stories and write, but they don’t put as much emphasis on the need to read and tell stories well. Talent coaching helps you by giving you a roadmap to follow so that you can build your vocal skills.
